EaglePicher is looking for a hands-on, experienced Cell Modeling Engineer to join the ranks of the Research and Development team at our Yardney Facility in East Greenwich, RI! This is a unique opportunity to be a key contributor in the early development and deployment of state-of-the-art lithium batteries to meet the challenging requirements of our rapidly growing Defense and Aerospace businesses.

The primary purpose of this position is to develop cell level electrochemical models that represent our various cell designs (both cylindrical and prismatic), in order to simulate performance and predict life under various use case conditions, as well as help reduce or optimize experimentation by simulating the performance impact from cell design optimization. You will develop/utilize, both physics based and simpler engineering based approaches and commercial software to achieve the desired results. You will be a key player in the R&D team, working closely with other scientists and engineers to generate the fundamental electrochemical parameters to support the development and validation of the models. You will also be a key player in the optimization of cell and battery pack designs utilizing the outputs from the modeling and simulation. You will be expected to work with commercial software like COMSOL and Battery Design Studio as well as external partners and consultants to support and accelerate the activities.   • Lead the development and validation of cell level electrochemical models to support the development and optimization of EaglePicher batteries
  • Work closely with and actively support and contribute to the measurement and selection of key electrochemical and cell design parameters to support the development of the models
  • Lead and actively support the judicious characterization and testing of cells to support the validation of cell models and longevity estimates
  • Strong fundamental knowledge on lithium-ion battery chemistry, electrochemical and thermal processes, and aging mechanisms
  • Strong mathematical skills in numerical methods of solving PDEs and ODEs, numerical optimization, and control theories
  • Strong working knowledge of Matlab/Simulink
  • Work closely with other scientists and engineers to accelerate design iterations and optimization through simulation of the effects of various cell design changes on cell performance
  • Work closely with Academia and other external partners to adopt the state-of-the-art tools (like AI) and approaches to accelerate the development of the modeling and simulation
  • Work with mechanical engineers and pack designers to support the thermal and structural management of pack and system designs using finite element analysis
  • Stay up-to-date with the state of the art for modeling, simulation, data science and AI to help raise the bar internally to be the best at what we do for our customers


  • Ph.D. in Engineering (preferably Chemical Engineering) with 5-7 years of experience developing cell level electrochemical models for Li Ion batteries in an academic or industrial/commercial environment
  • Significant sustained experience in electrochemical cell modeling and simulation utilizing COMSOL and MATLAB. Additional experience using Battery Design Studio is highly desirable
  • Experience working in a Research or R&D environment and the use of basic laboratory tools and equipment, including battery testing equipment like Maccor’s and Arbin’s
  • Excellent understanding of the interaction between chemistry, materials and processes and their impact on product performance and safety
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills in order to clearly communicate complex technical information to peers and management in an easily understandable manner
  • Good documentation skills and experience writing procedures and reports
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, statistical analysis and data based decision making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships across an organization and work collaboratively for the success of the business
  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

  • Be willing and able to travel up to 20% of the time or as needed to accomplish tasks and projects
