Eagle Picher is looking for an accomplished, hands-on Battery Scientist or Engineer with lithium battery experience to join the Research and Development team. This is an opportunity to make important contributions to the design and development of our state-of-the-art lithium batteries to meet the challenging requirements of our Defense customers. This position will serve as a key contributor for chemical, cell, and battery development to advance our Lithium-Ion power systems used for lasers, aircraft, satellites, and more. You will work with industry leaders within the company as well with customers who include NASA, JPL, BAE, Lockheed Martin, NOAA, Lawrence Livermore Labs, and Fortune 500 companies around the world. You will also interface with universities and technical institutions to develop cutting-edge technologies to advance our technology roadmaps and leverage technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to deliver the needed data and capabilities. The role will support R&D design and development functions for East Greenwich’s R&D facility for cell and battery efforts, focused on development at the chemical and cell design level, leading a team of Scientists and Engineers for advanced product applications. This position will be responsible for early process design, development, and transition to production for lithium-ion programs. The position will work within a multidisciplinary team of Scientists and Engineers, and will adhere to company policies and procedures. The position will oversee work functions both directly and indirectly for other engineering team members

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in multiple aspects of chemistry and cell design, specializing in both electrochemistry and engineering aspects of the early development process. You will be a key leader in the product development team, working closely with our research, product and process engineering, and quality, and operations staff to help drive and execute new projects to completion and support existing products. Your core responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead all cell development activities as the lead electrochemical expert for new and existing lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and support all project performance, timeline and cost targets.
  • Initiate, design, develop and coordinate projects of varying complexity in support of company goals as needed. Be accountable for ensuring that the choice of materials and chemistry in cell designs results in robust products that can be scaled up.
  • Direct the preparation and demonstration of design concepts to meet product specifications.
  • Know and apply current Engineering practices in light of Manufacturing and Quality Control considerations.
  • Make and/or direct the calculations involving engineering sciences (static, dynamic) and other associated subjects.
  • Stay abreast of the state of the art in lithium-ion battery technology and make recommendations that support EP’s strategic initiatives.
  • Work with external partners/suppliers to enable the adoption of the appropriate materials or technologies in order to bring the most value to EP and our customers without compromising robustness or quality.
  • Build relationships, work closely with and support all appropriate functions within the company to help grow the Defense business.
  • Lead, guide and mentor junior staff in order to improve EP’s processes and capabilities to become world class.

To succeed in this position, you must:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science with 5-7+ years of experience developing lithium batteries is required. MS / PhD degree is preferred and a strong foundation in Electrochemistry or Electrochemical Engineering.
  • Experience working on electrode materials, electrolytes, cell design, electrode processing, cell performance and safety.
  • Good understanding of the interaction between chemistry, materials and processes and their impact on product performance and safety
  • High level of understanding of design for manufacturability with demonstrated track record of successful product development
  • Demonstrated capability in team leadership
  • Strong problem solving and root cause analysis skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships across an organization and work collaboratively for the success of the business
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

In addition to meeting the basic requirements, the most successful candidate will also have:

  • Defense or Aerospace industry experience and familiarity with ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D certifications and stage gate development processes is highly desirable.
  • Motivated, passionate, self-starter with a track record of delivering above and beyond expectations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Training, experience and capability in statistical analysis
  • A can-do attitude, passion to succeed and an ability and willingness to wear multiple hats as needed
  • Experience with Solidwords/AutoCAD/Battery Modeling Software
